Adrenal glands

Adrenal glands (glandulae suprarenales) are located above the kidneys at the XI-XII thoracic vertebra and the posterior part adjacent to the diaphragm. Adrenal weight of 10-20 g. The left adrenal gland is located above the upper pole of left kidney and adjacent to the stomach, pancreas and spleen. The right adrenal gland is left, it lies above the upper pole of right kidney and adjacent to the inferior vena cava. Parenchyma adrenal cortical substance is formed by the outer and inner brain. In the adrenal glands secrete exocrine (exocrine) and endocrine (endocrine) part. The latter form the pancreatic islets.

Pancreatic islets are located along the entire thickness of the adrenal gland, the maximum number accumulated in the caudal region. The islands reach a size of 0.1-0.8 mm and are round or oval shape. They are formed by epithelial cells, and the outside covered with connective tissue, which contains a dense network of blood capillaries.
